Pulsation Dampener Calculator

Calculate the required capacity for a pulsation dampener to prevent pipe hammer and reduce friction losses in your discharge line.

Information Necessary for Sizing

Variables

V=Volume per pump stroke in cubic inches
K=Type of pump (K factor)
P=Mean operating pressure
D=Allowable pressure fluctuations as a percentage. Plus and Minus from Mean
n=Polytropic exponent of gas expansion. (Nitrogen=0.714, Air=1.0)

V) Volume Per Stroke Calculations:

1. Gallons Per Minute/Strokes Per Minute = Gallons Per Stroke
    Gallons Per Stroke x 231 Cubic Inches Per Gallon = Cubic Inch Per Stroke

      OR

2. .7854 X (Inch Bore Diameter); x Inch Stroke Length = Cubic Inch Per Stroke

K) Type of Pump: (K Factor)
Simplex:
Single Acting = .60 | Double Acting = .25
Duplex:
Single Acting = .25 | Double Acting = .15
Triplex:
Single Acting = .13 | Double Acting = .06
Quadruplex:
Single Acting = .10 | Double Acting = .06
Quintuplex:
Single Acting = .06 | Double Acting = .02
P) Operating Pressure (Mean): P
Desired Pressure Fluctuations:
Minimum Pressure Pmin = P-(PxD) | Maximum Pressure Pmax = P+(PxD)
FORMULA:
V x K ( P / Pmin )n = Cubic Inch Capacity Required
---------------------------
1 - ( P / Pmax )n
